Childhood asthma is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by airway inflammation, leading to recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing (Global Initiative for Asthma [GINA], 2024). It is a leading cause of pediatric hospital admissions and emergency visits worldwide. Effective management of childhood asthma involves early recognition of symptoms, proper medication use, patient education, and adherence to treatment guidelines (Ogunleye & Adebanjo, 2023).
At University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), nurses play a crucial role in the early detection and management of childhood asthma. However, gaps in nurses' awareness and adherence to asthma management guidelines may lead to suboptimal patient outcomes. Limited training, lack of standardized protocols, and inadequate resources can impact the effectiveness of asthma care (Okeke & Bello, 2024).
This study aims to examine nurses' awareness and management of childhood asthma at UMTH, assess compliance with standard treatment protocols, and identify barriers to effective asthma care.
Despite the availability of international and national guidelines for childhood asthma management, studies indicate that many healthcare professionals, including nurses, lack sufficient knowledge and skills in asthma care (Afolabi & Usman, 2024). Poor asthma control among children has been linked to increased emergency visits, prolonged hospitalizations, and preventable complications.
At UMTH, the extent of nurses’ awareness and implementation of evidence-based asthma management remains unclear. A lack of structured training programs and resource constraints may contribute to inconsistencies in care delivery. This study seeks to assess nurses’ knowledge and management practices regarding childhood asthma at UMTH, identifying challenges and recommending solutions to improve pediatric asthma care.
H₀: Nurses at UMTH have low awareness of childhood asthma symptoms and management.
H₁: Nurses at UMTH have high awareness of childhood asthma symptoms and management.
H₀: Nurses at UMTH do not adhere to standard guidelines for childhood asthma management.
H₁: Nurses at UMTH adhere to standard guidelines for childhood asthma management.
H₀: There are no significant challenges affecting nurses’ ability to effectively manage childhood asthma.
H₁: Significant challenges affect nurses’ ability to effectively manage childhood asthma.
This study will focus on nurses in pediatric and emergency units at UMTH. Limitations may include differences in individual nursing practices, variations in asthma severity among patients, and potential bias in self-reported adherence to guidelines.
